-The Lead: The Assumption College football team dominated in a 53-6 victory over the Ravens of Franklin Pierce University on Saturday afternoon. This was the first meeting for the two teams and a Northeast-10 contest.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-The Hounds used their first drive of the game to take an early 7-0 lead. After sophomore Joseph Kellum (Mt. Laurel, N.J. / Lenape Regional) returned the kickoff 50 yards, junior quarterback Easton Turner (Ashburn, Va. / Stone Bridge) connected with senior Tighe Beck (Wakefield, Mass. / Wakefield Memorial) for 23 more yards to bring the Hounds to the Franklin Pierce six yard-line. Turner found his way into the endzone to complete the drive with a touchdown in the opening 1:45 of play. First year Connor Hickey (Sutton, Mass. / Saint John's) made the extra-point.
-In Assumption's very next drive Kellum added 29 rushing yards, including a five-yard rushing touchdown to extend their lead to 14-0.
-The Hounds were able to add one more touchdown before the end of the first quarter. The drive started when Terrell Huff (Windsor, Conn. / Windsor) blocked a punt by the Ravens that resulted in a loss of six yards and brought the Hounds to the 20-yard line. Easton completed a 20-yard pass to senior Doug Santos (Peabody, Mass. / Peabody Veterans Memorial) and freshman Berrell Neal (Plainfield, N.J. / Pope John XXIII) rushed three-yards for the touchdown and the 27-0 advantage.
-Assumption struck two more times, early in the second quarter including a forced fumble by Elijah Riley (Hartford, Conn. / Northwest Catholic) that was recovered by senior Mac-Brian Nkongchu (Worcester, Mass. / St. John's) and returned 14 yards for the touchdown. The Hounds took a 53-0 lead into the halftime break.
-The Ravens broke their silence in the fourth quarter when Lo Jackson completed a 10-yard pass to Kejou Veillard and rushed for a total of 39 yards in a scoring drive. The Hounds held on for the 53-6 final victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
-Assumption finished with 328 total yards of offense. They rushed for a total of 155 yards and added 173 passing yards. The Ravens posted 174 yards of offense including 65 rushing yards and 109 passing yards.
-Defensively the Hounds finished with 74 tackles, one interception, four sacks, and five forced fumbles. First year Jael Feliz (Tampa, Fla. / Alonzo High) finished with a team-leading eight tackles, including one for a loss of four yards. Freshman Edward Allen (Upper Marlboro, Md. / Riverdale Baptist) tacked on six solo tackles, for a loss of 12 total yards, and one sack for a loss of six yards.
-Turner finished 6-for-11 in passing attempts with 112 yards and one touchdown. Neal led the Hounds' rushing game with 85 yards in 12 rushes and two touchdowns. Kellum followed up with 39 yards in eight rushes and one touchdown. Freshman Brevin Easton (Odenton, Md. / Archbishop Spalding) made three receptions for Assumption, gaining 48 yards and adding a touchdown in the victory.
-Hickey finished 5-for-6 in extra point attempts and senior Hayden Stagnone (Litchfield, N.H. / Campbell) made a 21-yard field goal and added 530 yards in nine kickoffs for the Hounds. Senior Seamus Wallace (Pawcatuck, Conn. / Stonington) punted four times for 191 yards including one touchback and two in the opposing 20-yard line.
-Drew Campanale was 11-for-25 in passing attempts, adding 79 yards and throwing one interception for Frankling Pierce. Jackson led the rushing game for the Ravens with 47 yards in six rushes and one touchdown. Veillard made four receptions for 32 yards for the visitors.
