-The Lead: The Assumption College men's basketball team fought their way to a Northeast-10 Conference victory over the Setters of Pace University at home on Tuesday evening. The two teams entered halftime tied at 30-30 and the Hounds went on to outscore the Setters, 37-31 in the final 20 minutes for the final 67-61 victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-The Setters took an early six-point lead to start the game. Junior Brandon Jacobs highlighted the opening three minutes with a basket from behind the arc as the visitors took a 10-4 lead with three minutes off the clock. They pulled ahead by 10 with back-to-back layups by senior Peyton Wejnert with just under 10 minutes off the clock, 17-7.
-Red-shirt Jordan White (Prince Frederick, Md. / Clinton Christian School) added six points in the next 2:30 of play and sophomore Cal Connelly (Rochester, N.H. / Spaulding / Tilton) hit a three in the run as Assumption pulled back within three, 19-16. The hosts took their first lead of the game with back-to-back drives to the basket by junior Matthew Kelly (North Potomac, Md. / Quince Orchard) and red-shirt junior Malik Brown (Waldorf, Md. / Northpoint). Brown was fouled on his way up and completed the three-point play with a made free-throw for the 23-21 lead with 4:46 on the clock.
-Pace pulled ahead by five again before first year Kani Glover (Brockton, Mass. / Catholic Memorial / Bridgton Academy) hit a three and senior Branislav Vujadinovic (Belgrade, Serbia / St. Joseph) made a layup to tie the game at 30-30 heading into the halftime break.
-Wejnert made a three and a layup to help Pace regain a six-point lead early in the second half, 39-33. The Hounds tied the game at 45-45 when first year Saxon Thompson (Allen, Texas / The Episcopal School of Dallas / Wilbraham & Monson Acad.) made a three with 11:31 on the clock. They regained the lead at the seven-minute mark when Connelly found room behind the arc, 52-49.
-Assumption never gave up the lead again and used six points at the free-throw line by Connelly to secure the final 67-61 victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
-White led the Hounds in scoring with 18 points and added five rebounds in the victory. Brown finished with 11 points and a team-high nine rebounds and Connelly put up 12 points.
-Wejnert led all scorers with 29 points for the Setters and finished with a double-double as he grabbed 13 rebounds. Austin Gilbertson added 14 points for the visitors.
-Assumption finished shooting 38% (19-for-50) from the field and went 6-for-20 from three-point range. Pace shot 44.8% (26-for-58) from field goal range and went 3-for-22 from beyond the arc.
-The Hounds edged Pace in rebounding, 35-30.
-Assumption shot 79.3% (23-for-29) from the free throw line while the Setters shot 60% (6-for-10) from the charity stripe.
