-The Lead: The Assumption College women's basketball team fell to the Yellow Jackets of American International College (AIC) on Saturday afternoon. The Hounds held a 24-18 advantage at the half, but the visitors outscored them 12-9 and 16-11 in the final two quarters to scoot by with the two-point victory, 46-44.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-Sophomore Emme Poulin (South Portland, Maine / Cheverus High School) capped off an early run by the Hounds with a basket from behind the arc, as Assumption gained a 7-0 lead with two minutes off the clock. The Yellow Jackets responded with four unanswered baskets to take an 8-7 lead. After almost four minutes of scoreless play Poulin made her way under the hoop for two to give Assumption the 9-8 edge at the end of the first quarter.
-Senior Brianna Capacchione (Washington Township, N.J. / Washington Township) kicked off scoring in the second with a three-pointer to push Assumption ahead 12-8. That three-pointer sparked a run for the Hounds as junior Temi Falayi (Peabody, Mass. / St. Mary's) added five points and Poulin hit another three to extend Assumption's lead to 14 with 4:54 on the clock (22-8). Junior Nyrie Holliman made back-to-back threes to help bring the visitors within six heading into the halftime break (24-18).
-First year Kayla Robinson added three points for AIC early in the third as she was fouled on her way up and knocked down her free-throw to bring her team within three, 24-21. The Hounds held onto the lead until the 29 second mark when senior Nadia Wooten made a basket from behind the arc to tie the game at 30-30. The Hounds responded right back with a three from Poulin to take the 33-30 lead into the final 10 minutes.
-AIC took over the lead, for the first time since the first quarter, on a three from Robinson. Junior Destine Perry extended their lead to seven with a three-pointer of her own at the 4:38 mark. Capacchione added seven points in the final 3:40 of the game, but the Yellow Jackets held on for the final 46-44 victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
-Capacchione finished with a double-double for the Hounds. She put up a game-leading 16 points and grabbed 11 defensive rebounds. Poulin finished with 14 points and went 4-for-8 from three-point range.
-Robinson led AIC with 13 points. Holliman finished with 11 points and Perry rounded out double-digit scoring with 10 points for the visitors.
-Assumption shot 34% (17-for-50) from the field and finished 6-for-16 from three-point range. AIC shot 25.4% (16-for-63) from field goal range and went 6-for-29 from beyond the arc.
-Assumption outrebounded the Yellow Jackets 54-29
-The game saw a total of five lead changes and two ties.
