-The Lead: The Assumption College women's basketball team battled their way to a two-point victory over the Chargers of the University of New Haven on Saturday afternoon. Senior Brianna Capacchione (Washington Township, N.J. / Washington Township) hit a jumper at the buzzer to lift the Hounds to victory in regulation.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-The Chargers used a 13-point run in the first quarter to pull ahead by eight with 2:51 on the clock, 15-7. Sophomore Camryn Debose led the way with seven points in the rally and finished the quarter with nine. The Hounds climbed back within five when sophomore Emme Poulin (South Portland, Maine / Cheverus High School) and Capacchione put up back-to-back three-pointers just under the two-minute mark, 18-13. New Haven closed the quarter on a six-point run to take an 11 point lead after the first 10 minutes, 24-13.
-Sophomore Caterina Fonseca (Enfield, Conn. / Enfield High School) put up five points in a nine-point rally for the Hounds as they pulled back within just two with 1:07 to play in the second quarter. Junior Brie Pergola put up a three in the last minute of play to lift the Chargers to a 33-26 lead heading into the halftime break.
-New Haven regained an 11-point lead early in the third quarter as first year Aurora Deshaies kicked off scoring with back-to-back layups, 35-26. Capacchione added 10 points in the third quarter, including two from behind the arc to help Assumption pull back within six, 46-40.
-Cappachione kept heating up in the fourth as she kicked things off with a basket from beyond the arc to bring the Hounds within three. Junior Temi Falayi (Peabody, Mass. / St. Mary's) added three points on a layup and made free throw to push the Hounds ahead by two at the 7:02 mark, 48-46. The game saw three ties in the final minutes before Capacchione hit the game-winning long jumper with one second on the clock, 59-57.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
-Capacchione led Assumption with 26 points as she shot 50% from the field (9-for-18) and finished 6-for-11 from three-point range. Falayi finished with a double-double as she put up 10 points and grabbed 13 rebounds in the victory.
-Pergola led New Haven with 15 points and added six rebounds and a team-leading four assists. DeBose added 13 points and six steals while Deshaies rounded out double-digit scoring with 12 points for the Chargers.
-The Hounds finished shooting 35.1% from field goal range and went 7-for-27 from three-point range. New Haven shot 39.7% from the field and finished 4-for-12 from beyond the arc.
-The Chargers went 7-for-7 from the free throw line and Assumption when 12-for-16 from the charity stripe.
-Both teams grabbed 36 rebounds in the contest and turned the ball over 21 times.
-The game saw a total of three ties and six lead changes.
