-The Lead: The Assumption College men's ice hockey team extended their unbeaten streak to 13 games with a 3-1 victory over the Penmen of Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU) on Saturday evening.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-Assumption got on the board 12 minutes into play when senior John McDonagh (Latrobe, Pa. / Shady Side Academy (Prep)) swung the puck around the back of the net and sophomore Dante Maribito (Geargetown, Mass. / Phillips Academy (Prep)) dished it to his classmate, Michael Zampanti (Winthrop, Mass. / Islanders Hockey Club (USPHL Premier)) up top who got the shot past the bottom right foot of SNHU goaltender, Kurt Gutting.
-The Penmen tied the game at 1-1 with an early goal in the second period. Junior Kyle Galloway found sophomore Andy Somerville on the right post who was able to backhand the pass in with 14:23 on the clock.
-The Hounds responded just three minutes later when Maribito found his way around the net and put the puck in on the left post for the 2-1 lead. Sophomore Mike D'Ambrosio (Centreville, Md. / Boston Jr. Bruins (USPHL Premier)) and senior Ben Barton (Kenai, Alaska / Cushing Academy (Prep)) assisted on the goal.
-Assumption put up one more goal in the second period with just 1:20 left on the clock. After a battle in front of the net, sophomore Devan Sheth (Ashland, Mass. / Islanders Hockey Club (USPHL Premier)) dished the puck up top to senior Robert Roche (Holden, Mass. / Tri City Storm (USHL)) who put a shot on net that lifted over the right arm of Gutting for the 3-1 advantage.
-The game remained scoreless through the final 20 minutes as the Hounds took home the final 3-1 victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
-Assumption outshot the Penmen 37-32. SNHU went 0-for-4 while on the power play and the Hounds went 0-for-3.
-Assumption had three different players score in the victory. Maribito finished with two points from a goal and an assist in the victory. Roche and Zampanti each finished with a goal while sophomore Jared Bernis (Melrose, Mass. / Boston Jr. Rangers (EHL)), D'Ambrosio, McDonagh, Sheth, and Barton all added assists.
-Senior goaltender David Zulauf (Rochester, Mich. / Bridgton Academy (Prep)) improves to 5-4-1 on the season as he made 31 saves in the victory. Gutting made 34 saves in the setback and falls to 6-9 on the season.
