-The Lead: The Assumption College men's ice hockey team saw their season come to an end when the Ravens of Franklin Pierce University scored midway through the first overtime period to secure a 4-3 comeback-victory on Saturday night.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-Assumption got on the board just under five minutes into play. Senior David Zulauf (Rochester, Mich. / Bridgton Academy (Prep)) came up with a save that was picked up by Assumption and brought down into the Franklin Pierce defensive end. First year Colin Philippon (Salem, N.H. / Vermont Lumberjacks (EHL)) flipped the puck to sophomore Michael Zampanti (Winthrop, Mass. / Islanders Hockey Club (USPHL Premier)) who snuck a shot by Raven's goaltender, Ian Wallace, for the 1-0 lead.
-Just three minutes later the Hounds struck again on a tally by Colin Philippon. Senior Brendan Philippon (Salem, N.H. / Philadelphia Flyers (USPHL Premier)) connected with sophomore Dante Maribito (Georgetown, Mass. / Phillips Academy (Prep)) who dished the puck to Colin Phiippon posted up in front of the net, for the 2-0 advantage.
-Zulauf finished the first period with 10 saves, including five in a row at the 12-minute mark to secure the 2-0 lead at the end of the first.
-Franklin Pierce came alive at the start of the second period with an unassisted goal by Alex Lester just 1:03 into play.
-The Ravens tied the game at two, seven minutes later when Stephen Jacobs found the back of the net at the 8:16 mark. Assumption and Franklin Pierce headed into the final 20 minutes tied at 2-2.
-After winning the face-off, Assumption used a goal by sophomore John Pigott (Arlington, Mass. / Tilton School (Prep)), assisted by Zampanti, just 27 seconds into the third to pull ahead 3-2. The Ravens responded at the nine-minute mark with another goal by Jacobs, and the two teams headed into the locker rooms to gear up for an overtime period, 3-3.
-Assumption outshot Franklin Pierce in regulation, 31-24. Zulauf finished the first three periods with 21 saves while Wallace made 28 for Franklin Pierce. The Ravens were 1-for-3 on the power play while the Hounds went 0-for-3. Assumption won 49 face-offs while the visitors came up with 33.
-Franklin Pierce scored the golden goal in the eighth minute of overtime. Sophomore Chris Stevenson picked up a shot that was blocked and managed to slip it underneath Zulauf's pads at 8:25 to send the Ravens to the NE10 Championship.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
-Assumption outshot Franklin Pierce 39-28.
-Zulauf finished with 24 saves for Assumption while Wallace made 36 stops for the Ravens.
-Assumption went 54-for-97 in face-off while Franklin Pierce went 43-for-97.
-Jacobs scored twice for the Ravens and Maribito had two assists for the Hounds.
