-The Lead: The Assumption University field hockey team kept their winning streak going with a win on the road at Northeast-10 Conference opponent, No. 7 Stonehill on Wednesday night. The Greyhounds scored their goals in the second and third period to take a 2-0 lead before the Skyhawks put up a bid for a comeback. Assumption defense stood strong over the 60 minutes of play to help lift the team to the 2-1 final.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-The Skyhawks outshot Assumption 3-1 over the first 15 minutes. The hosts were also awarded two penalty corners, but the Greyhound defense held strong to send both teams into the second period tied 0-0.
-The Greyhounds opened up scoring when they capitalized on a penalty corner with just under six minutes to go in the second quarter. Lucy Malia (Scarborough, ME / Scarborough) got a strong shot off that was tipped in by her classmate, Summer Walsh (South Yarmouth, Mass. / Dennis-Yarmouth Regional) on the post for the 1-0 lead with 5:42 on the clock.
-The Hounds outshot Stonehill 4-3 (4-2 shots on goal) in the first half. The visitors were awarded three penalty corners and scored on one for the one-goal lead heading into the halftime break.
-Assumption doubled their lead with another corner play in the third period. Walsh inserted the ball up to Jenna Graf (Ballston Lake, N.Y. / Shenendehowa) at the top of the circle and she launched a shot to the back right corner that grazed the pads of Stonehill goalkeeper, Abigail Campbell for the 2-0 lead.
-The Skyhawks cut the visitor's lead in half, scoring with 3:52 to go in the game. Madi Weber sent a long ball up the field that found the stick of Claudia Crowe. Crowe beat Assumption goalkeeper, Kylie Gargiulo (Madison, Conn. / Daniel Hand) at the top of the circle to come within one, 2-1.
-Stonehill was awarded a penalty corner with just under one minute to play. The Assumption defensive sticks held strong through the final seconds to come up with the 2-1 final victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
-The Greyhounds edged Stonehill in total shots 9-8 (7-5 shots on goal).
-The visitors were awarded seven penalty corners while Stonehill was awarded five.
-Gargiulo made four saves in net for Assumption and improves to 12-1 on the season.
-Campbell made five saves in goal for Stonehill and falls to 10-3.
