-The Lead: The Assumption University football team defeated the Yellow Jackets of American International College 42-21 at home on Saturday afternoon. The Greyhounds used a mix of great offense and strong defense, including four interceptions, to secure the conference win.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-The Greyhounds got on the board with their first drive of the game. Senior Khaleed Exum-Strong (Norwichtown, Conn. / Norwich Free Academy / Trinity Pawling) took a 19-yard run up the left lane into the endzone for the first touchdown of the game with 8:34 on the clock. Junior Patrick May (Boylston, Mass. / Tahanto Regional) knocked down the field goal for the 7-0 lead.
-On a third and 10 play for the Yellow Jackets, with the ball on the Assumption 15-yard line, Senior Keelan Borguet (Franklinville, N.J. / Delsea Regional / Jireh Prep) came up with a huge interception to give Assumption the ball back at the five-yard line with 5:06 to go in the first quarter.
-Assumption capitalized on their defensive efforts with another score at the 1:23 mark. Senior quarterback, Easton Turner (Ashburn, Va. / Stone Bridge) completed a perfect 25-yard pass to his classmate Kyle Sonnie (West Roxbury, Mass. / Catholic Memorial) in the back left of the endzone for the 14-0 advantage.
-With 10:10 on the clock in the second quarter, Exum-Strong snuck through the defense, and jumped up and into the endzone to put the Greyhounds up 20-0. May was good on his third extra-point attempt of the day to give Assumption the 21-0 advantage.
-The Yellow Jackets got on the board with 6:03 to go in the second quarter. On a third and one play Samad Davila rushed one yard into the endzone to bring the visitors within 14 (21-7).
-Assumption wasted no time, responding with a 99-yard kick-off returned by Isaiah Huff (Windsor, Conn. / Milford Academy) all the way into the endzone for the 28-7 lead. With the run, Huff tied Deonte Harris for the second longest return in Assumption football program history.
-The Greyhounds extended their lead as Exum-Strong rushed around the right side into the endzone for the 35-7 lead with 10:57 on the clock in the third quarter.
-AIC put up their second score of the game 2:58 to go in the third quarter. Quarterback, Jayson Demild rushed for three yards to put the visitors at the Assumption three-yard line. DeMild then completed a three-yard pass to Davila in the endzone to bring the Yellow Jackets within 21 (35-14).
-With 3:21 to go in the game the Greyhounds tacked on one more touchdown. Berrell Neal (Plainfield, N.J. / Pope John XXIII) snuck right up the middle for a 50-yard rushing touchdown and May's kick was good for the 42-14 lead.
-AIC never let up, with one last scoring play at the 1:49 mark in the fourth. They used three plays to gain 74 yards and DeMild completed a 66-yard pass to Jahvon Adams for the touchdown (42-21).
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
-The Hounds put up 430 yards of offense from 140 passing yards and 290 rushing yards. Turner finished 14-for-22 in passing attempts, gaining the Hounds 125 yards. His longest pass completion was 25 yards and he had one touchdown pass in victory.
-Exum-Strong led the rushing game for Assumption with 110 yards on 17 carries. He averaged 6.5 yards per rush with three touchdowns. His longest run was 23 yards.
-Senior Tighe Beck (Wakefield, Mass. / Wakefield Memorial) led the receiving game for the hosts, making four catches for 39 yards.
-May went 6-for-6 on extra point attempts.
-Huff finished the day with 125 yards on two kick returns, including his 99-yard return for a touchdown.
-Anthony Laramee (Shrewsbury, Mass. / Shrewsbury) led the Greyhounds on defense with seven total tackles (six solo, one assist). He also grabbed an interception in the first quarter.
-The Greyhounds finished with 51 total tackles and four interceptions.
