-The Lead: The Assumption University field hockey team pulled off an overtime victory over the Hawks of Saint Anselm College in a Northeast-10 Conference battle on a rainy Tuesday evening. Saint Anselm dominated the first half, outshooting the Greyhounds 7-1, but Assumption came alive in the second half and overtime period putting up eight shots to the visitor's two.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-With just under two minutes remaining in the first quarter Saint Anselm saw a bid at the first goal of the game. The ball crossed the middle of the circle to Maddie Davis on the right post who got a shot off, but four-time NE10 Goalkeeper of the Week, Kylie Gargiulo (Madison, Conn. / Daniel Hand) made a diving stop to keep the two teams tied 0-0 heading into the second stanza.
-Saint Anselm was awarded back-to-back corners at the 7:48 mark and Gargiulo made a couple more clutch saves in the scuffle before the Hawks were awarded a penalty stroke. Shelby Dunn came in to take the stroke for the visitors and sent it low and wide right as the two teams still stood at 0-0.
-On the Hawks next possession Maggie Molloy beat the Assumption defense but Gargiulo came out of the net making a beautiful stack save to shut down the momentum.
-Just under 10 minutes to go in the game Assumption was awarded a penalty corner and peppered Saint Anselm goalkeeper, Mackenzie McConell with shots. The two teams held strong on defense and headed into an overtime period tied 0-0.
-The Hawks edged Assumption in total shots in regulation, 9-7
-The Greyhounds put the game winner in just over three minutes into the overtime period. Kileigh Hynes (Auburn, Mass. / Auburn) got ahold of the ball at the top of the circle and sent the ball in for first year Mia Salah (Gloucester, Mass. / Gloucester) to get a stick on it and redirect the ball over the foot of McConnell for the 1-0 final victory.
