The Greyhounds improve to a perfect 6-0 in NE10 play and handed the Chargers their first conference loss of the season as they slip to 5-1. The win marked head coach Annie Lahey's 100th career win as the Hounds continue to make their mark in the conference, regionally, and nationally.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-The first period was evenly matched with a battle at both ends of the field. The Hounds were awarded just one penalty corner and got one shot on net over the first 15 minutes.
-Assumption outshot New Haven 4-1 in the second period with two penalty corner opportunities, but the Chargers defense held strong as the two teams headed into the halftime break tied, 0-0.
-The Hounds turned up the offensive pressure in the third period, putting up seven shots and did not allow the visitors to get a single shot off. The hosts saw a pair of close opportunities under the five-minute mark, with a high shot by first year Mia Salah (Gloucester, Mass. / Gloucester) swatted away by New Haven goalkeeper, Keira Integlia to hold the game at 0-0 heading into the final 15 minutes.
-With 5:50 to go, following a scuffle in front of the Assumption net, New Haven was awarded a penalty stroke. Senior Reilly Bialko lined up for the shot, but Assumption goalkeeper, Kylie Gargiulo (Madison, Conn. Daniel Hand) came up with a huge save to keep the Greyhounds and Chargers tied 0-0.
-With just under two minutes to go in the game, the Greyhounds capitalized on a penalty corner opportunity. Summer Walsh (South Yarmouth, Mass. / Dennis-Yarmouth Regional) inserted the ball up to her classmate Jenna Graf (Ballston Lake, N.Y. / Shenendehowa) at the top of the circle and Graf wound up and fired a shot to the back left corner for the 1-0 victory.
