-The Lead:The Assumption University Men's Soccer team continued their 2021 season on Saturday afternoon with a win over Bentley in NE10 action. Before the game the Greyhounds recognized eight senior on senior day Tony Abdulky (Worcester, Mass. / Doherty), Noz Panagopoulos (Cambridge, England), Christopher Lund (Copenhagen, Denmark), Ruben Faria (Fall River, Mass. / Bishop Connolly), Tyler Moreau (Hooksett, N.H. / Manchester Central), Mauro Cortez (Providence, R.I. / La Salle Academy), Kevin Hernandez (San Juan, P.R. / Colegio San Jose), and Connor Willis (North Andover, Mass. / North Andover)
HOW IT HAPPENED
Vanilton Xavier (Brockton, Mass. / Brockton) started the scoring just five minutes into the game when Quinn Serafino crossed a ball into the box that the Bentley keeper deflected off the post and right to a waiting Xavier, who tapped it into the net to give the Hounds the early lead.
-Vegard Pernes (Oslo, Norway) gave the Hounds a 2-0 lead in the 35th minute when he cut into the Bentley box and fired a curling shot into the left corner of the net.
-Bentley responded in the 21st minute when Johann Fraser took a pass from the midfield and slipped behind the defense and beat senior goalie Tony Abdulky (Worcester, Mass. / Doherty) with the shot to bring the Falcons within one.
-Senior Ruben Faria (Fall River, Mass. / Bishop Connolly) scored with 5 minutes left in the first half when the Hounds won a corner and Matthew Dion (South Windsor, Conn. / South Windsor) served the ball to the back post and Faria was there to head it in.
-Xavier added his second goal of the game in the 52nd minute when he blocked a Bentley pass in the Falcons half and Xavier raced by the Bentley keeper and fired a low shot into the bottom left corner to give the Hounds the 4-1 win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
-The Hounds took 18 shots on the night with 11 on target while Bentley took 11 shots with two on target.
-Abdulky made one save on the day while also picking up his first win of the season.
-Assumption won 11 corners while the Falcons took seven.
