-The Lead: The Assumption University football team continued their 2021 season on the road with 2nd place New Haven. A rainy contest all afternoon, Assumption hung tough with the hosts in the low scoring game, with New Haven being up 7-3 at half. The two teams traded touchdowns in the third quarter and the Chargers used a safety to seal the win.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-New Haven opened the scoring in the first quarter after a Hounds turnover led the Chargers to take over at their 5-yard line, New Haven quarterback Connor Degenhardt used a rush of four yards and then 1 yard to put the hosts ahead.
- The Hounds responded on their next drive when Patrick May (Boylston, Mass. / Tahanto Regional) completed a 28-yard field goal to bring the Hounds within four points.
-Both teams stuck with the run game in the rain, with Khaleed Exum-Strong (Norwichtown, Conn. / Trinity Pawling) getting 22 rush attempts with 147 yards on the day. While New Haven's Zach Mauro had 25 rushes for 133 yards and one touchdown.
-At the start of the second half New Haven came out of the locker room aggressive and called to Mauro on most of the drive, rushing for 40 yards over 6 plays and ultimately scoring on the drive when he scored on a seven-yard run to put the Chargers up 14-3.
-Assumption responded immediately when Jordan McAfee (Peabody, Mass. / Everett) found senior wide receiver Vincenzo DiCarlo (Hazlet, N.J. / Raritan) for a 26-yard touchdown pass to pull the Hounds within four, 14-10.
- After more back and forth on defense, New Haven was able to secure the victory with just under two minutes in the fourth quarter when they were able to get a safety on McAfee to give them a 16-10 lead and the victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
-The Hounds had 233 total yards of offense on the day (165 rushing, 68 passing) while the Chargers had 206 total yards (189 rushing, 17 passing)
-Edward Allen led the Hounds defense with 8 tackles (4 solo, 4 assist)
