-The Lead: The Assumption University field hockey team defeated the Spartans of Saint Thomas Aquinas in their final game of the 2021 regular. With the win the Greyhounds finished the season with an undefeated record in Northeast-10 Conference play and the best finish in program history. Prior to the start of the game the Greyhounds recognized 12 seniors and fifth years for senior day: Shannon Quinlan (Buffalo, N.Y. / Williamsville North), Kileigh Hynes (Auburn, Mass. / Auburn), Jenna Graf (Ballston Lake, N.Y. / Shenendehowa), Sydney Bouchard (Cape Neddick, Maine / York), McKenzie Patterson (Conway, Mass. / Frontier Regional), Lucy Malia (Scarborough, ME / Scarborough), Alexa Mulvihill (Westbrook, Conn. / Westbrook), Isabel Primack (Ipswich, Mass. / Ipswich), Deirdre Burchill (Braintree, Mass. / Braintree), Summer Walsh (South Yarmouth, Mass. / Dennis-Yarmouth Regional), Hannah Tepper (Stroudsburg, Pa. / Stroudsburg) and Kylie Gargiulo (Madison, Conn. / Daniel Hand).

HOW IT HAPPENED

-Assumption outshot the Spartans 4-1 over the first 15 minutes of play. Jessie Hohenstein made three saves for Saint Thomas Aquinas to keep the two teams tied at 0-0 heading into the second stanza.

-Assumption got their first goal on the board just over one minute into the second quarter. Burchill pushed the ball through the Spartan defense to find the stick of Patterson. Patterson collected the ball in the circle and was able to push it over the right foot of Hohenstein for the 1-0 lead.

-The Hounds extended their lead to 2-0 with a goal at the 10 minutes mark. Primack picked up a rebound off the pads of Hohenstein and found Quinlan off her right shoulder. Quinlan lifted the ball to the top right corner for the 2-0 advantage.

-Assumption outshot STAC 10-1 in the first half.

-With two minutes to go in the third period Assumption pulled ahead 3-0 when they capitalized on a corner play. Hynes sent a long ball in from the top of the circle and Bruchill got a tip on it to redirect it to the stick of Primack. Primack got one more touch on the ball for the 3-0 lead.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

-Assumption outshot STAC 21-3 (13-2 shots on goal).

-Gargiulo made one stop in net for the Greyhounds and improves to 17-1 on the season.

-Hohenstein made 10 saves in the setback and falls to 8-10 on the season.

-Assumption was awarded 13 penalty corners while STAC was awarded five.

-Assumption is set to host STAC again on Monday, November 1st for the first round of the NE10 Tournament.
