-The Lead: The Assumption University men's ice hockey team picked up their first win of the 2021-22 season in the consolation game of the Woo Cup Tournament on Sunday evening. The Greyhounds defeated the Lancers of Worcester State University, 6-3, to improve to 1-1 on the season. Senior Devan Sheth (Ashland, Mass. / Islanders Hockey Club (USPHL Premier)) was named to the All-Tournament team. Quinn Tucker from Anna Maria, Peter Miko from Nichols, and Nick Pennucci from Worcester State joined Sheth on the All-Tournament Team. Nichols goalkeeper, Korbinian Lutz was named the Woo Cup Tournament MVP.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-Assumption opened up scoring just under one minute into play. Senior Dante Maribito (Georgetown, Mass. / Phillips Academy (Prep)) won the opening faceoff and found his classmate, Robert Holyoke (Middleboro, Mass. / South Shore Kings (USPHL Premier)) who quickly sent the puck to the back of the net for the early 1-0 lead.
-The Lancers tied the game up with 11 minutes to go in the first period. Henry Bruckner found Max Tucker open and Tucker was able to slide the puck over to Brian Clougherty who netted his first goal of the season (1-1).
-The Greyhounds responded just 20 seconds later with an unassisted tally by junior Colin Philippon (Salem, N.H. / Vermont Lumberjacks (EHL)) for the 2-1 lead heading into the second stanza.
-Assumption outshot Worcester State 16-7 over the first 15 minutes of play.
-The second period was scoreless through the first 19 minutes, but senior Sheth capitalized on a break-away with just 50 seconds on the clock to put the Hounds up 3-1 heading into the final 15 minutes. Sheth picked up the puck in the right lane and beat the defense to put a shot up to the crossbar that dropped behind Worcester State goalkeeper, Wyatt Friedlander, for the two-point advantage.
-Assumption outscored the Lancers 3-2 in the final period to claim the 6-3 final victory. First year Ronny Paragallo (Huntington, N.Y. / New Hampton School) put the Hounds up 4-1 with a goal just over one minute into the period. Holyoke found Sheth who was able to get the puck over to Paragallo and the rookie netted his first collegiate goal.
-Worcester State cut the Greyhounds lead in half with a goal on a power play in the fourth minute of the period. Drew Eid scored the second goal of the day for the Lancers and Kevin Drevitch assisted on the tally as the Lancer trailed by two, 4-2.
-With 6:15 on the clock, Assumption pulled back ahead by three on another goal by Sheth, this time assisted by Paragallo for the 5-2 lead.
-The Lancers responded three minutes later when they added an extra attacker to the line-up and Clougherty was able to net his second goal of the game (5-3).
-Assumption put in their final goal of the game as the Lancers had an empty net and sophomore Camron Roberts (Old Lyme, Conn. / Lyme-Old / Vermont Lumberjacks (EHL)) scored his first collegiate goal for the 6-3 final victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
-Assumption outshot Worcester State 36-24 in the victory.
-The Hounds were 0-for-6 on power plays and Worcester State was 1-for-1.
-The Greyhounds had six penalties called for a total of 12 minutes while the Lancers had seven penalties on the night for 14 minutes.
-Sophomore Thomas McLarnon (Fountainville, Penn. / Boyertown Area / New Hampton (Prep)) made an impressive 21 saves in net for the Greyhounds and improves to 1-1-0 on the season.
-Friedlander made 30 stops in net for the Lancers and falls to 0-1 on the season.
