-The Lead: The Assumption University Men's soccer team continued their 2021 season on the road at Adelphi on Wednesday night in New York and played a back and forth battle throughout the first half heading into the locker room down 2-1. The Hounds pressured all night to find the tying goal but Adelphi added an insurance goal in the 77th minute to secure the 3-1 win.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Panthers started the scoring in the 14th minute when Benji Jones fired a shot from deep and put it in the top corner where Francisco Texiera (Sao Paolo, Brazil) couldn't get a glove to it, giving the hosts a 1-0 lead.
-Assumption responded four minutes later when sophomore Vegard Pernes (Oslo, Norway) found Vanilton Xavier (Brockton Mass. / Brockton) with a pass and Xavier was able to capitalize and even the score at 1-1.
-Adelphi immediately took the lead back just 12 seconds later when Tim De Meij fired a shot that rattled the post and then off a Hounds defender and into the net for an own goal and a Panthers 2-1 lead.
- With Assumption pressuring for an equalizer all second half, the Panthers were able to add an insurance goal in the 77th minute to ice the game and secure the win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
-Assumption had 5 shots (3 on goal) while the Panthers had 16 (10 on goal).
-Francisco Texeira made seven saves on the night while Daniel De La Heras made two.
-The Hounds won four corner kicks on the night while Adelphi took 9.
