-The Lead: The Assumption University football team picked up their second straight win with a 26-0 shutout over the Southern Connecticut State University under the lights on Friday night. The Greyhounds put on an offensive and defensive show as the stands were packed with Assumption welcoming outside fans for the first football game since 2019. The first half saw all the scoring of the night as both teams remained scoreless through the final two quarters and the Greyhounds walked away with the final NE10 victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-Assumption scored two touchdowns and converted on one field goal attempt to take a 17-0 advantage in the first quarter.
-With 12:05 on the clock senior Easton Turner (Ashburn, Va. / Stone Bridge) completed a 14-yard pass to his classmate, Tighe Beck (Wakefield, Mass. / Wakefield Memorial) who he found in the back right side of the endzone to put the hosts up 7-0.
-With 5:22 to go in the first, junior Patrick May (Boylston, Mass. / Tahanto Regional) knocked home a 20-yard field goal to extend Assumption's lead to 10-0.
-On Assumption's second-to-last drive of the first quarter, Turner kept his passing game up, completing a 31-yard throw to sophomore Quinn Sieger (Saint John's, Fla. / Creekside) to pull ahead 17-0 heading into the second quarter.
-Just over three minutes into the second period, after the Owls broke up a pass by Turner intended for senior Kyle Sonnie (West Roxbury, Mass. / Catholic Memorial) and forced a fourth and 10, May lined up for a 27-yard field goal and put the Greyhounds up 20-0.
-The final score of the game came with 6:43 on the clock in the second quarter. Turner faked a handoff to senior Khaleed Exum-Strong (Norwichtown, Conn. / Norwich Free Academy / Trinity Pawling) on his left and carried it into the endzone up the right lane for the 26-0 final.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
-Turner finished the game 18-for-30 for 230 yards of offense, two touchdows.
-Joe Bernard went 6-for-20 for the Owls, throwing for 34 yards.
-Exum-Strong led Assumption's running game with 18 carries for 152 yards gained. He averaged 8.4 yards per rush with the longest being 24 yards.
-Junior Baley Collier (Westfield, Mass. / Westfield) made four catches for Assumption for 64 yards, the longest being a 36-yard catch.
-May finished the game 2-for-2 on field goal and extra-point attempts.
-Senior Anthony Laramee (Shrewsbury, Mass. / Shrewsbury) led Assumption on defense. He had five solo tackles.
-Assumption tallied 27 first downs and allowed the Owls just 14 first downs.
-The Greyhounds finished with 449 total yards of offense while SCSU finished with 220 yards.
