-The Lead: The Assumption University field hockey team extended their win streak to 10 games with a 8-0 shutout victory over the Owls of Southern Connecticut State University (SCSU) on Saturday afternoon on the road. The Greyhounds used five different goal scorers en route to the 8-0 victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-The Greyhounds scored one goal in the first quarter when Shannon Quinlan (Buffalo, N.Y. / Williamsville North) ripped a shot from the top and Christina Leonard (Marlborough, Mass. / Marlborough) tipped it to the left side for the 1-0 lead.
- Assumption extended their lead to 3-0 with two goals in the second period. With just over four minutes off the clock Jenna Graf (Ballston Lake, N.Y. / Shenendehowa) collected a ball off SCSU goalkeeper, Jenna Ward's pads, and dished it to first year Mia Salah (Gloucester, Mass. / Gloucester) who found the back of the net for the 2-0 lead. Just three minutes later McKenzie Patterson (Conway, Mass. / Frontier Regional) found Isabel Primack (Ipswich, Mass. / Ipswich) who back-handed a shot in to the right corner for the 3-0 advantage heading into the halftime break.
-Assumption doubled their goals in the third period with three goals all within two minutes of each other. Deirdre Burchill (Braintree, Mass. / Braintree) carried the ball down the right side and crossed it to Sydney Bouchard (Cape Neddick, Maine / York) who knocked it in with five minutes on the clock for the 4-0 lead. Just one minute later Salah netted her second goal of the game and the Greyhounds pulled ahead 6-0 with another tally by Leonard to close the third period.
-The Greyhounds came out strong in the final quarter with another goal from Salah, this time assisted by Liz Zenevitch (Worcester, Mass. / St. Peter Marian) for the 7-0 lead just 30 seconds in.
-Tori Geaglone (Enfield, Conn. / Enfield) assisted on a goal by Burchill in the final minute of the game to clinch the 8-0 final victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
