THE BASICS

-The Lead: The Assumption University women's basketball team continued their 2021-22 season on Saturday with a non-conference matchup on the road with the Chargers of Dominican College. The game was a back and forth battle with the Chargers taking a one point lead into halftime. The Hounds were able to overcome a deficit in the fourth quarter and hang on for the victory. 

HOW IT HAPPENED

-The entire afternoon was a back-and-forth battle between both sides with very little room for error. The Hounds led by as many as seven in the first quarter, led by Monica Spain (Braintree, Mass. / Braintree) scoring five points to lead the Hounds. 

-Freshman Marina Callahan (Burlington, Mass. / Burlington) came off the bench and led the Hounds with 16 points on the day, scoring eight in each half. 

-Meghan Cramb (New Boston, N.H. / Bishop Guertin) scored nine points for the Hounds in the third quarter and Assumption was down by one heading into the final frame. 

-Dominican took a 10-point lead with just five minutes left to play in the game but the Hounds put together a 10-2 run in a span of three minutes to go down by one after two Spain free throws. 

-After a Chargers made three, Callahan responded and sunk a jump shot to bring the deficit to one yet again, sophomore guard Amanda Mieczkowski (Hadley, Mass. / Northampton) then converted two free throws to put Assumption ahead 64-63. 

-Dominican then fouled Mieczkowski again who made two more free throws to push the lead to three and after a Charger layup, Spain was fouled, and she converted both her free throws to secure the 68-65 victory for the Hounds. 

-Spain finished with 15 points and Mieczkowski finished with 11 including going 6-6 from the free throw line. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

-Dominican outrebounded the Hounds 47-46

-Assumption was 24-62 (38.7%) shooting on the day while the Chargers were 26-77 (33.8%)

-The Hounds went 15-21 (71.4%) from the free throw line including 10-13 (76.9%) in the fourth quarter.

-The Hounds are back in action tomorrow, November 28, when they face off with the Mavericks of Mercy College in Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. Tip off is set for 1:00pm.
