-The Lead: The Assumption University Men's soccer team concluded their 2021 season at home with a double overtime draw vs NE10 opponent, Saint Anselm. Both sides played an aggressive 110 minutes looking for a win to hopefully punch their ticket to the playoffs. Neither side was willing to give in and created multiple chances, with all 11 players for each team leaving it all on the field for the final game of the 2021 season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-Ruben Faria (Fall River, Mass. / Bishop Connolly) got the Hounds on the board in the 23rd minute when Jamison McGowan (Pawcatuck, Conn. / Stonington) swung a cross in from the left side and found the head of Faria on the back post to give Assumption the lead.
-Josue Assantha answered with nine minutes left in the half when Jackson Bukunt fired in a pass from the right side and Assantha was able to fire it home past Abdulky to tie the game and send both teams into the locker room with a 1-1 score.
-The Hawks took the lead in the 53rd minute off a set piece when Chris Gallier sent in a deep ball from the Hawks half into the Assumption box and found Michael Fortin who headed it past Abdulky to put the Hawks ahead.
-Assumption tied the game with just five minutes remaining in the game when they were constantly pressuring to get the equalizer and Faria swung a cross into Vanilton Xavier (Brockton, Mass. / Brockton) who headed it into the left corner to send the crowd and Greyhounds into a frenzy, tying the game at 2-2.
-The game saw two overtime periods that were highly intense forcing both goalies to make big saves to keep their sides in it. Neither side was able to find a winner after 20 minutes of overtime, ending the game in a tie.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
-The Hounds took 14 shots on the evening with eight of them on target while Saint Anselm took 15 shots with five on target.
-Tony Abdulky made three saves while Brian Underhill made six.
-Assumption won seven corners while the Hawks took four.
