-The Lead: The Assumption University Men's Ice Hockey team continued their 2021 season on Friday night with their first NE10 conference matchup of the year vs Stonehill. The game was a physical back and forth battle with Stonehill jumping out to a 4-0 lead over the first two periods. The Hounds managed to pulloff the comeback tying it with 3 minutes left in the 3rd, but a Stonehill goal off a deflection with under 30 seconds left in the contest upended the Hounds.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-The Skyhawks started the scoring 9 minutes into the game when Mike Seoane scored a power play goal on a wraparound goal that was set up by Brendan Nehmer and Charlie Page.
-The Hounds had trouble in the first period staying out of the penalty box, racking up seven infractions totaling 15 minutes.
-Stonehill added another power play goal with two minutes to play in the first period when Max Pineo fired a one time blast set up by Seoane, from the point to beat David Altman (Bristol, R.I. / Northern Cyclones (EHL) to give the visitors a 2-0 lead headed into the first intermission.
-Stonehill added onto their lead just two minutes into the second period when Teddy McElaney scored a third power play goal on a wrist shot from the point set up by Nehmer and Pineo.
-The Skyhawks made it 4-0 just four minutes later when Jake Cady scored on a one-timer right in front of Altman on a pass from Pat Sunderland to chase Altman from the game.
-The Hounds got their first goal of the night with four minutes left when Devan Sheth (Ashland, Mass. / Islanders Hockey Club) scored on a feed from Mike D'Ambrosino (Centreville, Md. / Boston Junior Bruins) to make the score 4-1 heading into the second intermission.
-The third period was all Greyhounds when they scored just two minutes into the period when John Pigott (Arlington, Mass. / Tilton School) capitalized on a turnover in the Stonehill zone and fired a wrist shot over the glove of Day to cut the deficit to 4-2.
-Assumption kept the pressure on and scored with eight minutes left when Collin Montgomery (Natick, Mass. / Valley Junior Warriors) scored a shorthanded goal from the point set up by Sheth and Robert Holyoke () to make it a 4-3 game.
-The Hounds got the tying goal with three minutes left when Montgomery collected his second goal of the game when Dante Maribito (Georgetown, Mass. / Phillips Academy) won a faceoff back to John Woernle (Wellesley Hills, Mass. / Tilton School) who slid a pass over to Montgomery and he fired a wrist shot past Day's glove side to tie the game at 4.
- Stonehill scored the winning goal on the night with 14 seconds left when Seoane deflected a shot from the point by Augie Stevens to give the Skyhawks a 5-4 victory, despite the Hounds valiant efforts to battle back from 4 goals down.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
-The Hounds took 35 shots on the night while the Skyhawks took 32.
- John Day got the win for the Skyhawks making 31 saves on the night while David Altman started in net for the Hounds and made 13 saves and Tom McLarnon (Fountainville, Penn. / New Hampton) made 14 saves.
-The Hounds won 38 faceoffs while Stonehill won 33.
