-The Lead: The Assumption University men's ice hockey team continued their season on Saturday night with a tough conference matchup with Southern New Hampshire. The Hounds lead 3-2 after two periods but SNHU scored two unanswered in the third including the game winner with just over a minute to play to create the 4-3 final.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-SNHU opened the scoring just two minutes into the game when Jack Gray took a pass from Joseph Fiorino and chipped it by graduate goalie David Altman (Bristol, R.I. / Northern Cyclones)
-Assumption responded quickly scoring off the faceoff when Christopher Stalmok (Paxton, Mass. / Boston Jr. Bruins) created a turnover behind the SNHU net and fired a pass to the point where Mike D'Ambrosio (Centreville, Md. / Boston Jr. Bruins) wound up and fired a slap shot past Adam Mercer to tie the game at 1.
-Assumption took the lead just two minutes later when John Pigott (Arlington, Mass. / Tilton School) tipped in a shot from Colin Philippon (Salem, N.H. / Vermont Lumberjacks) to give the Hounds the 2-1 advantage.
-SNHU tied the game five minutes into the second period when James Nash tipped in a shot from Alex Ring to tie things at 2.
-Assumption scored a powerplay goal in the second period with just under 10 minutes left when William Smith (Hyde Park, Mass. / Williston Northampton School) tipped in a rebound off shot from Jared Bernis (Melrose, Mass. / Boston Jr. Rangers) to give the Hounds a 3-2 lead heading into the third period.
-SNHU tied the game three minutes into the third when James Nash went end to end and fired a wrister past Altman to tie the game at three.
-SNHU found the game winner with just over a minute left when Jake Cox buried a rebound following a shot from Cole Stewart to give the visitors the 4-3 victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
-Assumption outshot SNHU 35-30.
-Adam Mercer made 32 saves for the Penmen improving to 6-1 while David Altman made 26 saves to go 2-2-1 on the season.
-Assumption won 43 faceoffs while SNHU won 33.
