Box Score THE BASICS

-The Lead: Despite a two hour lightning delay, the Assumption University men's soccer team continued their 2021 season at home on Saturday night and picked up their first Northeast-10 Conference game of the year against Stonehill. The Hounds had a 2-1 lead heading into the half, with the second half turning into a high pressure, physical game. Stonehill seemed to grab a tying goal in the final minutes but the Hounds kept their composure and found a winner to secure their first win of the campaign.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-Stonehill opened the scoring in the 29th minute when Zach Davis applied pressure at midfield and got a pass off to Jacob Wozinicki who made a nice run on goal and beat the Hounds defense and keeper with a left footed shot into the bottom right corner.
-Assumption answered right back with a scramble in front of the net and senior Kevin Hernandez (San Juan, Puerto Rico), found the ball at his feet and put it past the Stonehill goalkeeper to level the Hounds at one.
-With three minutes left in the first half, junior Jamison Magowan (Pawcatuck,Conn/Stonington) took the ball in the box and made a smooth cut back move to then feed a wide open Hernandez who blasted a shot into the Stonehill net for his second goal of the game and put the Hounds up going into halftime.
-The second half was a back and forth battle, with both teams registering double digit shots keeping both goalies busy, with Stonehill registering 11 shots and Assumption with 13.
- After winning a free kick near the right corner flag with three minutes to play in the game, first year goalkeeper, Francisco Teixeira (Sao Paolo, Brazil) stopped the initial Skyhawks header but the rebound was put home by Iago Luiz De Sousa Viera to tie the game.
-The Hounds kept their composure and went on the attack in the final three minutes looking for a winner, winning a free kick in their own half working the ball from the right side and back through the middle, junior Charr Jobe (Uxbridge, Mass/Nipmuc Regional) slid the ball to freshman Jesus Guarcas (Providence, R.I./Classical) who hit a left footed shot that beat the Stonehill goalie low and to the right to sends the Hounds bench and fans into a frenzy and secure the win for Assumption.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
-The Hounds totalled 20 shots in the game with 15 of them on target, while Stonehill had 17 shots and eight on target.
-Texeira made six saves in net for Assumption and picked up his first win of the season.
-The game winning goal from Guarcas and was the first goal of his career.
