-The Lead: The Assumption University Men's soccer team traveled to Manchester for an NE10 contest with the Penmen of Southern New Hampshire University. The first half was closely contested with Assumption generating a few chances, but SNHU was able to put two goals in the back of the net before the half. The second half was all SNHU who poured in three more goals with Assumption avoiding the shutout to create the 5-1 final.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-The Assumption defense and junior goalie George Dixon IV (East Bridgewater, Mass./East Bridgewater) were kept busy all night facing 10 shots in both halves from SNHU with 12 being on target.
-Assumption had a great chance in the 25th minute when a cross came in from the right side and Vanilton Xavier (Brockton, Mass./Brockton) rose above the defense to head the ball on net but SNHU goalie Jackson Rivers sprawled out and made an incredible save to deny the Hounds.
-With ten minutes left in the first half the Penmen won a corner and were able to get the ball on net, the first shot was saved by Dixon but the rebound was still loose, and put home by Alexander Reiter to give SNHU the 1-0 lead.
-With 11 seconds left in the first half, SNHU won another corner and took it quickly. The ball bounced to a wide open Julio Betar who was able to head it past Dixon to put the Penmen up 2-0 heading into the half.
-SNHU kept the pressure on the Hounds scoring six minutes into the second half when Michael Goncalves scored his first of the night.
-Immediately after conceding the goal, Assumption was able to get on the scoresheet when Xavier took a pass from Kevin Hernandez (San Juan, P.R.) and was able to beat the SNHU keeper for his first collegiate goal.
-Goncalves was able to beat the Hounds defense and Dixon two more times to record a hat trick on the night and create a 5-1 final for the Penmen.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
-Assumption had five shots total with three being on target while SNHU recorded 20 with 12 being on target.
-Dixon made 6 saves on 11 shots faced while SNHU senior Jackson Rivers made two saves on three shots.
