-The Lead: The Assumption University field hockey team battled their way to a 3-2 overtime victory over the Falcons of Bentley University in Northeast-10 Conference action on Wednesday evening. The Hounds put the offensive pressure on all game, sitting at a 0-0 tie heading into the second half of play. The Greyhounds outshot Bentley 13-6 in the second half and 7-2 in the overtime period en route to the 3-2 final victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-Assumption outshot Bentley 10-0 over the fist two periods, but the Falcons defense held strong as the two teams headed into the halftime break tied at 0-0. Bentley first year goalkeeper, Mia Trottie held the Hounds off with four saves in the first half.
-The second half saw all the action as Bentley opened up scoring with a goal just under the eleven-minute mark in the third period. After a scuffle in front of the net, graduate student Sam Simione got ahold of the ball and dished it to junior Ava Bevilacqual who was able to tip it up and over the right side of Assumption goalkeeper, Kylie Gargiulo (Madison, Conn. / Daniel Hand) for the 1-0 lead.
-With 4:50 to go in the third period Isabel Primack (Ipswich, Mass. / Ipswich) settled the ball on the left post and flicked it up to the top right corner to tie the game at 1-1 heading into the final period.
-The Hounds came out strong in the fourth period with seven shots and four penalty corners in the first five minutes. After a penalty corner at the 53:54 mark, Trottie made a save for the Falcons but Assumption first year Mia Salah (Gloucester, Mass. / Gloucester) was able to pick it up and find Deirdre Burchill (Braintree, Mass. / Braintree) open for the tip in and 2-1 lead.
-Bentley wasted no time and tied the game on their next possession. First year Lida Coco found senior Christine Murray up the right side and Murray fired a shot in from the top right of the circle to tie the game at 2-2 and force the overtime period.
-After 9:50 of overtime play the Hounds were awarded a penalty corner and capitalized on it for the victory. With nine seconds to go, senior Summer Walsh (South Yarmouth, Mass. / Dennis-Yarmouth Regional) inserted the ball to the top where her classmate Jenna Graf (Ballston Lake, N.Y. / Shenendehowa) collected the ball and fired it in for Salah to get a stick on it for the 3-2 final victory.
