The Lead: The Assumption University men's football team contined their 2021 season on the road with an NE10 matchup against Stonehill. The Hounds put up points in all quarters but couldn't hold a last minute Stonehill comeback in in the fourth quarter falling 27-26.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-Assumption opened the scoring on their first drive of the game using a steady balanced attack scoring when Khaleed Exum-Strong (Norwichtown, Conn./Trinity Pawling) powered his way into the endzone to put the Hounds up 7-0 after the point after attempt was good.
-Assumption scored again with three minutes left in the first quarter when Raekwon Washington (Waban, Mass./Newton South) had a big run of 33 yards and then scored on the next play using a five yard run to put Assumption up by two touchdowns.
- Stonehill answered immediately on their next possession when quarterback Anton Stoneking found Chase Conrad for a 22 yard pass across the middle of the Assumption defense to cut the lead to 14-7.
- After an Assuption turnover on downs at the end of the first quarter, the Skyhawks got the ball back and responded immediately using a steady balanced attack capping off the drive when Stoneking found Chris Domercant for a 19 yard touchdown pass on the left side of the field to tie the game at 14.
- Patrick May (Boylston, Mass./Tahanto Regional) converted a 38 yard field goal attempt at time expired in the second quarter to give the Hounds a 17-14 lead heading into halftime.
-With three minutes left in the third quarter after a defensive battle for most of the quarter, May drained a 23 yard field goal to push the Hounds lead to 20-14.
- On the first possession of the first quarter, Stonehill tried to respond quickly but junior defensive back Tre'Sean Bouie (Philadelphia, PA./ Nuemann Goretti) intercepted Stonekings pass at the Assumption 19 yard line and took it 81 yards to the Stonehill endzone for a Hounds touchdown to give them a 26-14 lead.
-Stonehill responded after the turnover when Stonekind found Domercant for a 41 yard gain through the air and then again for an 8 yard gain. They capitalized on the big plays when Justin Felder scored on a two yard rush to make the score 26-21.
-After trading punts for most of the fourth quarter, Stonehill got the ball back with two minutes left and went strictly through the air on this drive capitalizing when Stonekind found Cameron Alves for a 20 yard touchdown pass with 36 seconds left to give the Skyhawks the 27-26 victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
-Assumption University had 374 yards of total offense (105 passing, 269 rushing), while Stonehill had 387 yards (223 passing, 164 rushing).
-Turner went 6-19 on pass attempts while Anton Stoneking went 19-34 with 3 touchdown passes.
-Exum-Strong had 24 rush attempts for 173 yards and a touchdown.
-Defensively, the Hounds were led by Anthony Laramee (Shrewsbury, Mass. / Shrewsbury) who had 10 tackles (6 solo, 4 assists) and Daniel Malm (Worcester, Mass. / St. Peter Marian) with 9 total tackles (8 solo, 1 assist)
