-The Lead: The NO. 4 nationall ranked women's field hockey team cruised to a 3-1 victory in Northeast-10 Conference action over Pace on Saturday afternoon in front of a large home crowd. The Hounds dominated all facets of the game keeping possession for much of the day while playing solid defense.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-The Hounds got on the score sheet in the final minute of the first with a penalty stroke that was taken by senior Lucy Malia (Scarborough, ME/ Scarborough) who successfully converted the penalty to give Assumption the 1-0 lead.
-With two minutes left in the second half, Shannon Quinlan (Buffalo, N.Y./Williamsville North) jumped on a loose ball and poked a pass past the goalie to Christina Leonard (Marlborough, Mass./Marlborough) who put a shot into the wide-open net giving the Hounds a 2-0 lead heading into halftime.
-In the third period, Jenna Graf (Ballston Lake, N.Y./Shenendehowa) intercepted a pass in the middle of the field and took it down the right side of the circle and fired a shot that was tipped in by Deirdre Burchill(Braintree, Mass./Braintree) to push the lead to 3-0. With the goal, Burchill now holds the record with 37 career goals in Assumption field hockey program history.
-In the 4th period with under a minute left, Pace won a corner play and the initial shot was stopped by senior goalie Kylie Gargiulo (Madison, Conn,/ Daniel Hand) but the rebound found freshmen Noelle Meij who found the back of the net to create the 3-1 final.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
-Assumption registered 22 shots (16 shots on goal ) on the day while Pace had 8 (8 shots on goal)
-Senior goalie Kylie Gargiulo made 7 saves on the day while Grace Henderson made 12 saves for the Setters.
-The Hounds won 11 penalty corners while Pace won six.
