-The Lead: The Assumption University field hockey team used an explosive start to secure a 2-0 victory over the Panthers of Adelphi University in Northeast-10 Conference action on Tuesday evening. The hounds wasted no time, scoring their two goals just after the first whistle, and held the Panthers to five shots on goal to clinch the final 2-1 victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-Assumption got an early jump on the Panthers, scoring two goals in the first three minutes of the game.
-Just over one minute in the Hounds were awarded a penalty corner and capitalized on the play when Summer Walsh (South Yarmouth, Mass. / Dennis-Yarmouth Regional) inserted the ball and senior Deirdre Burchill (Braintree, Mass. / Braintree) ripped a shot to the back of the net for the 1-0 lead.
-Just over 60 seconds later Assumption extended their lead to 2-0 when senior Shannon Quinlan (Buffalo, N.Y. / Williamsville North) found her classmate, Sydney Bouchard (Cape Neddick, Maine / York) open for her first goal of the season.
-The Greyhounds held Adelphi off over the next 46 minutes, but the Panthers got on the board with a goal by Kelsey Catalano, assisted by Danielle Kemf with 15 minutes of play remaining.
-Despite Adelphi outshooting Assumption 13-12, senior goalkeeper, Kylie Gargiulo (Madison, Conn. / Daniel Hand) came up with four big saves to hold onto the 2-1 victory for the visitors.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
-Assumption edged Adelphi 7-6 in shots in the first half before the Panthers outshot them 7-5 over the second 30 minutes of play. The Greyhounds put nine shots on goal while Adelphi put five on goal.
-Gargiulo made four saves in the win and improves to 7-1 on the season.
Amanda Montiel made seven stops in net for Adelphi and falls to 3-3 this season.
-Adelphi was awarded seven penalty corners while Assumption was awarded five.
