-The Lead: The Assumption University men's soccer team opened up the 2021 season at home on Saturday afternoon in a non-conference match-up with the Bears of Bloomfield College. In a back-and-forth battle in front of the nets, the Hounds ultimately fell 3-2 in overtime play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-Bloomfield opened up scoring with a tally at the 28-minute mark. The Bears were awarded a free kick in front of the net and senior Reimiki Brooks found the back of the net for the 1-0 lead.
-Assumption responded just two minutes later off a corner kick. Junior Quinn Serafino (West Springfield, Mass. / West Springfield) lifted the ball to the front of the net, and senior Kevin Hernandez (San Juan, P.R. / Colegio San Jose) got a foot on it to tie the game at 1.
-With 10 minutes left in the half, junior Quincy Ball picked up a rebound in front of the net and found room behind Assumption goalkeeper, Francisco Teixeira (Sao Paulo, Brazil / Vera Cruz), to take the 2-1 lead into the halftime break,
-The Hounds used another corner kick play, this time first year Jesus Guarcas (Providence, R.I. / Classical) found sophomore Vegard Pernes (Oslo, AE / Lambertseter vgs) open, to tie the game up 2-2 early in the second half.
-The remaining 40 minutes of regulation play remained scoreless as the two teams headed into an overtime period tied, 2-2.
-Andreé Di Reumante tallied the game-winner for the Bears as he used a break-away run behind Teixeira to lift his team to victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
-Assumption outshot Bloomfield, 17-12.
-The Hounds were awarded 10 corner kicks while the Bears took four.
-Teixeira made three saves in his college debut and falls to 0-1 to start the season.
-Junior Robert Kornel made five saves in net for Bloomfield and improves to 1-0.
