-The Lead: The Assumption University football team opened the 2021 season on the road at Kutztown on Saturday afternoon. The Hounds trailed 9-0 at the half and Kutztown put points on the board in the third and fourth quarters to claim the final 19-0 victory. The Greyhounds are back home next Saturday, September 11th, to host Bentley at 1:00 p.m.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-After a scoreless first quarter, Kutztown got on the board with a 21-yard field goal made by senior Dean Krcic. Graduate student Eric Nickel completed a 7-yard pass to his classmate, Mason McElroy for the first touchdown of the season and the 9-0 lead heading into the halftime break.
-The Bears extended their lead to 16-0 with their second possession of the third quarter. Sophomore Donny Blaine completed a 15-yard pass to junior Jerome Kapp for the touchdown. Krcic made another field goal, this time from 33-yards out, for the 19-0 final victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
-Kutztown finished with 418 total yards of offense. They rushed for a total of 191 yards and added 227 passing yards. Assumption posted 139 yards of offense including 22 rushing yards and 117 passing yards.
-Junior Jael Feliz (Tampa, Fla. / Alonzo High) led the Hounds on defense with 16 total tackles, including 11 solo tackles one tackle for a loss.
-Senior quarterback, Easton Turner (Ashburn, Va. / Stone Bridge) finished 12-for-20 in passing attempts with 117 yards. Khaleed Exum-Strong (Norwichtown, Conn. / Norwich Free Academy / Trinity Pawling) led the Hounds' rushing game with 34 yards in 8 rushes.
-Nickel was 10-for-16 in passing attempts, adding 97 yards and one touchdown for the Bears. Sophomore Jake Davis led the rushing game for the Ravens with 66 yards in 10 rushes and one touchdown.
