-The Lead: The Assumption University field hockey team defested the No. 2 ranked Warriors of East Stroudsburg University, 1-0, in a non-conference match-up on Sunday afternoon. The win improves the Greyhounds to a 1-1 record to start the 2021 season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-The first two periods were scoreless as the two teams battled it out in the midfield. East Stroudsburg had a late shot in the second period called back on a foul and the two teams headed into the halftime break tied at zero.
-Assumption came out strong in the third period, putting pressure on the Warriors' defense early on. Just one minute in first year Mia Salah (Gloucester, Mass. / Gloucester) got the ball in the circle and found senior Isabel Primack (Ipswich, Mass. / Ipswich) in front of the net. Primack was able to flick the ball over the right side of East Stroudsburg goalkeeper, Amy Supey, for the 1-0 lead.
-The Greyhounds' defense held strong in the second half, with six saves from senior goalkeeper, Kylie Gargiulo (Madison, Conn. / Daniel Hand) to hold on for the1-0 final victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
-The Warriors outshot Assumption 14-4.
-Both teams were awarded five penalty corners.
-Gargiulo made seven saves in net and improves to 1-1 on the season.
-Amy Supey made three stops for the Warriors and falls to 0-2 on the season.
