-The Lead: The Assumption University women's basketball team continued their 2021-22 season on Saturday afternoon on the road with conference matchup versus the Chargers of New Haven. The Hounds went into halftime with a nine point lead and were able to build their lead to as many as 15 points in the third and the Hounds ended the game on a 5-0 run over the final three minutes. With the win, head coach Kerry Phayre secured her 400th win at Assumption.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-Marina Callahan (Burlington, Mass. / Burlington) scored the first five points for the Hounds as she would have a team high 17 including 10 rebounds to give her a double double on the day.
-Ja'Lyn Armstrong (Baltimore, Md. / Institute of Notre Dame) would give the Hounds their first lead of the game a minute into the second quarter and Assumption never looked back, with Armstrong scoring eight in the second quarter and Meghan Cramb (New Boston, N.H. / Bishop Guertin) hit two three pointers to help give the visitors a nine point lead heading into the half.
-Cramb would hit two more three pointers in the third quarter and Callahan would hit a three four minutes into the quarter to give the Hounds a 15 point lead, their largest of the day.
-Aurora Deshaies would lead the Chargers with a double double consisting of 24 points and 12 rebounds.
-The Chargers chipped away at the lead and got the game within five points but Assumption went on a 5-0 run to close the game, snapping a five game losing streak.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Assumption would go 20-51 (39.2%) shooting on the day while New Haven was 19-56 (33.9%)
-The Hounds out rebounded the Chargers 40-34
-Assumption went 12-16 (75%) from the free throw line.
