-The Lead: The Assumption University women's basketball team continued their 2021-22 season on Saturday afternoon with a conference matchup versus the southern division conference leaders, the Dolphins of Le Moyne College. The first half saw the Dolphins go on a few quick runs and gave the hosts a three point lead heading into the second frame. The Hounds came persistent on offense and outscore the Dolphins in the quarter, taking a one point lead heading into the half. The second half was a back and forth battle with the Dolphins holding onto multiple ten point leads that the Hounds could not recover from.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Meghan Cramb (New Boston, N.H. / Bishop Guertin) had four of the first six Hounds points over the first three minutes of the first quarter. The Dolphins then went on a quick 7-0 run, but the Hounds tied it on a Anna Davis (Ipswich, Mass. / Proctor Academy) layup and then took the lead on a Cramb jumper.
-Lauren Hammersley (Garden City, N.Y. / Our Lady of Mercy Academy) would hit a three pointer with just over a minute left in the first quarter and then got the hot hand in the second quarter, scoring 11 of the Hounds 20 points in the quarter to give the visitors a one point lead heading into the halftime break.
-The first five minutes of the third quarter saw both teams trading baskets and Le Moyne was able to pull ahead by ten points but back to back shots from Kaije Hall (Maplewood, N.J. / Columbia) and Hammersley cut the Dolphins deficit to six heading into the final frame.
-Hammersley hit a three to open the fourth quarter and give her a career high 22 points.
-The Dolphins would outscore the Hounds in the fourth 17-12 including going 4-4 from the free throw line in the final minute to give them some breathing room and create the 74-63 final.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
-The Hounds would outshoot the Dolphins on the day going 28-56 (50%) while Le Moyne shot 25-69 (36.2%)
-The Dolphins won the rebound battle 38-36.
