-The Lead: The Assumption University men's ice hockey team continued their season on Friday evening with a highly anticipated matchup between the top two teams in the NE10. The Hounds were powered by three quick first period goals scored within a span of three minutes of each other to come out firing. The Hounds added two more in the second to increase their lead to 5-0 and look to close out the game comfortably. SNHU put up two goals in the third trying to respond and spark a comeback but the Hounds defense played big and held on for the 5-2 win.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Christopher Stalmok (Paxton, Mass. / Boston Junior Bruins) opened the scoring when he put a one timer past Adam Mercer on a pass from Deven Sheth (Ashland, Mass. / Islanders Hockey Club)
-Collin Montgomery (Natick, Mass. / Valley Junior Warriors) was the next Hound to score when he drifted into the slot and put a wrist shot into the back of the net with helpers coming from Elliot McGuire (Reading, Mass. / Truro Bearcats) and Dara Conneely (Arlington, Mass. / Phillps Andover)
-John Fine-Lease (Willsboro, N.Y. / Walpole Express) added a third for Assumption after a scramble in front of the net, took a pass from Sheth and fired it home to increase the lead to 3-0.
-Almost halfway through the second stanza, Colin Phillippon (Salem, N.H. / Vermont Lumberjacks) scored on the powerplay for the Hounds on an assist from William Smith (Hyde Park, Mass. / Williston Northampton)
-Robert Holyoke (Middleboro, Mass. / South Shore Kings) scored the final goal for the Hounds just minutes later on helpers from Dante Maribito (Georgetown, Mass. / Phillips Academy) and Mike D'Ambrosio (Centreville, Md. / Boston Junior Bruins)
-The Penmen used two powerplay goals in third with 20 shots in the period, desperately trying to mount a comeback but David Altman (Bristol, R.I. / Northern Cylcones) made 31 saves on the night to push the Hounds to victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
-SNHU outshot the Hounds 33-30.
-Assumption won the faceoff battle 40-35.
