Women's Basketball Downs Perennial Power Bentley On Senior Night

Box Score

WORCESTER, Mass. – Senior Lauren Hammersley (Garden City, N.Y.) scored a game-high 21 points in leading the Assumption University women's basketball team to a 68-62 victory over Bentley at Laska Gymnasium.

Ella Thompson broke a 4-all tie with a 3-pointer at the 6:07 mark to give Bentley a lead they would hold for the remainder of the quarter. But after Amanda Kabantu also converted from downtown to extend the margin to seven, the Greyhounds started to come back and ended the frame on a 7-2 run to pull within two.

The second quarter was also tightly contested, as the teams played a one-possession game for nearly the duration of the 10 minutes. Following five lead changes, a trifecta by Hammersley which was set up by sophomore Amanda Mieczkowki (Hadley, Mass.) with 1:16 on the clock gave the Greyhounds a 33-29 advantage at the break.

Assumption, which shot 70 percent from the floor in the second quarter, maintained the momentum in the third and built up a nine-point lead at 40-31 when freshman Marina Callahan (Burlington, Mass.) stole the ball from Autumn Ceppi and found junior Monica Spain (Braintree, Mass.) in transition for a layup at 8:49. Bentley, however, fought back by tying the game at 44s on an Ella Thompson layup and jumping ahead courtesy of a Kari Brekke trey.

Even though Bentley (14-7, NE-10 12-5) led 57-52 after the third by getting a Thompson buzzer-beating jumper, the Greyhounds refused to go away and clawed back in the fourth. The hosts caught fire and scored 15 unanswered over a span of 8:34. Hammersley provided 10 points during the hot stretch, which included sinking consecutive 3-pointers during the middle of the run to put Assumption in control for the rest of the way and en route to a six-point win.

Hammersley contributed 21 points to lead the way for Assumption by shooting 6-of-9 from the floor, including 4-of-6 from long range, and 5-of-8 at the line. Callahan recorded 12 points and four assists, while Spain finished with 13 points, six rebounds, and two blocked shots. Senior Ja'Lyn Armstrong (Baltimore, Md.) also scored in twin figures, netting 10 points, and pulled down seven boards.

Maggie Whitemore and Brekke scored 13 points apiece to pace Bentley, while Whittemore also had five rebounds and two blocks. Thompson netted 14 points.

Assumption (11-12, NE-10 8-10) will wrap up the regular season with playoff positioning on the line when it visits Franklin Pierce on Tuesday, Feb. 22 at 5:30 p.m.
