Women's Basketball Concludes Regular Season With 52-47 Win Against Franklin Pierce

Box Score

RINDGE, N.H. – Freshman Marina Callahan (Burlington, Mass.) shot 4-of-5 from the field and scored eight points in the second half as the Assumption University women's basketball team earned a 52-47 road victory over Franklin Pierce to conclude the regular season on Tuesday evening.

Assumption scored the first six points and led 9-2 by getting a 3-pointer from senior Lauren Hammersley (Garden City, N.Y.) at the 5:24 mark. The Greyhounds extended their lead to double digits at 14-4 courtesy of a 3-pointer off the hands of sophomore Amanda Mieczkowski (Hadley, Mass.) from the left corner, but the Ravens came back.

Trailing 16-12 at the end of the first quarter, Franklin Pierce (11-14, NE-10 7-12) took its first lead when Lisa Sulejmani nailed a jumper to make it 19-18 with 6:31 remaining in the second. But even though the hosts maintained the lead for much of the second, exceptional ball movement by the Greyhounds was capped with Hammersley finding freshman Kaijhe Hall (Maplewood, N.J.) for a buzzer-beating layup to give their team a 28-27 edge at the half.

After Rylee Skinner opened the scoring in the second half with a layup, Assumption (12-12, NE-10 9-10) responded with a 16-5 run to take control. Callahan led the charge by scoring six points during the stretch which ended with the Greyhounds holding a 44-34 advantage.

Assumption, which led by eight after three quarters, maintained its lead throughout the fourth despite being challenged by the Ravens the entire time. The hosts came within four on three occasions and made it a one-possession game when Emma Carter swished a long three from the left arc with 1:56 to go.

However, that was as close as the Ravens would come. Ines Gimenez Monserrat missed two 3-pointers in an attempt to tie the game, and Greyhound graduate student Meghan Cramb (New Boston, N.H.) converted free throws in the waning seconds to put the game out of reach.

Callahan filled the stat sheet by registering 14 points, five rebounds, and three assists to lead the way for Assumption. Senior Ja'Lyn Armstrong (Baltimore, Md.) contributed 10 points, while Mieczkowski added nine points, four rebounds, three assists, and blocked two shots.

Sulejmani led three Franklin Pierce players in twin figures with 16 points and six boards. Skinner came just shy of a double-double with 14 points and nine boards, and Carter finished with 10 points.

Assumption, which boasts an 8-5 record on the road, earned the fifth seed in its division for the upcoming Northeast-10 Conference Tournament and will travel to face an opponent to be determined for the opening round on Friday, Feb. 25.
