Men's Ice Hockey Soars Past Saint Anselm in Third Period, 4-3

WORCESTER, Mass. – For the second time in three games, the Assumption University men's ice hockey team overcame a 3-1 deficit after two periods and won. This time, the Greyhounds struck for three goals in the third to topple Saint Anselm, 4-3, in Northeast-10 Conference action Friday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Assumption was the first team to strike, as Ronny Paragallo snipped a one-timer from the top of the left circle 4:44 into the first period. Saint Anselm answered with a pair of scores in the latter portion of the opening frame, as the Hawks took a 2-1 lead into the second.
 
Saint Anselm controlled the action in the middle period, as they outshot the hosts by a 14-11 margin and took a 3-1 lead following a Hunter Brackett strike at the 6:17 mark. In the third period, Assumption came out slow until the 3:23 marker. After winning a scrum in the corner, Dara Conneely passed the puck to a dangerous area, where Colin Phillippon passed it over to a charging John Woernle, who scored top blocker. With 5:52 remaining in regulation, Christopher Stalmok tied the game up for the Greyhounds as he buried the rebound, which came off the Woernle shot from the point. William Smith broke the tie for Assumption, as the Graduate Student received a no-look pass from Stalmok behind the net and beat the Hawks' netminder to the near post with two minutes remaining in regulation. Despite the extra attacker for the Hawks, after they pulled their goalie with t:37, the Greyhounds held on for their third-straight win.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Drew Benedict recorded 34 saves in the crease for Assumption.
  • The Greyhounds outshot the Hawks 45-39 while also winning 36-of-68 faceoffs
  • Assumption went 2-for-6 on the man advantage, while Saint Anselm was scoreless on five attempts.
  • The Greyhounds have outscored the Hawks 10-3 in the third period this season. On the year, Assumption has outscored their opposition 34-18 in the final period of regulation.
