WORCESTER, Mass. – Assumption University football defensive back
Isaiah Huff has signed a contract with the Ottawa Redblacks, a professional Canadian Football Team.
Huff was named to the Don Hansen NCAA Division II All-America Second Team. In addition, Huff was named First Team All-Conference, All-New England, and D2CCA All-Super Region 1 honoree.
"This means a lot; when I first went to college, I wasn't believed in," stated Huff. "Thanks to Ashton Grant, who was one of the main reasons I came to Assumption. He helped me get in touch with the Greyhounds' coaching staff, and without Grant, I would not be able to have this opportunity. I want to thank Tyler Coyle, Terrell Huff, Dexter Lawson, Martin Manson, and Jason Pinnock for helping me push to be the best player I can be."
Starting play in 2014, the Redblacks are the third CFL team to play in Ottawa. The Ottawa Rough Riders, formed in 1876, were a founding member of the CFL in 1958 and played until 1996. A new Ottawa franchise was created as the Renegades in 2002 and lasted until the end of the 2005 season. The Redblacks won the 2016 Grey Cup Championship, which ended a 40-year Grey Cup championship drought for the city of Ottawa.
"Isaiah always dreamed of playing at the professional level," stated Football Head Coach
Andy McKenzie. "He worked hard to pursue that dream, and when he had opportunities to demonstrate his skills, he made the most of them. We are proud of his accomplishments as a Hound we are looking forward to watching Isaiah make his name in the CFL."
In 2021, Huff was named All-New England Team by the New England Football Writers Association. That season, Huff had 16 tackles, two interceptions, one touchdown, eight pass breakups, 18 kick returns for 717 yards, one touchdown, and three punt returns for 29 yards in nine games.
Huff began his collegiate career at Hampton University (2017-18) with two tackles in seven games. Then, Huff transferred to Assumption University (2019, 2021-22) with 58 tackles, five interceptions, one touchdown, 30 pass breakups, one blocked kick, 54 kick returns for 1,620 yards, one touchdown, and 12 punt returns for 93 yards.
Huff will be the fourth Assumption alumni playing professional football, as Deonte (Harris) Harty, Zach Triner, and Carlins Platel are all in the National Football League.
