Women's Soccer ties No. 23 Saint Anselm, 1-1

MANCHESTER, NH – The Assumption University women's soccer team used a late penalty kick to tie Saint Anselm College 1-1 on the road Wednesday evening in Manchester, New Hampshire.

HOW IT HAPPENED  
 
Saint Anselm started on the front foot, firing multiple shots on frame that were saved high and low by Frida Larrson. Delaney Farinha first got in on the action for the visiting Greyhounds, with her shot missing high right. With less than ten minutes to go in the first half, neither side had a clear opportunity to take the lead, but the Hawks won a free kick in a good area. Saint Anselm took their chance with the free kick, as it landed in the box, and it was eventually turned in by Madison DiNapoli, putting the Hawks up 1-0. Assumption would trail 1-0 at the halftime break.
 
With three minutes of the second half, Saint Anselm looked to double their lead, but none of the chances were converted. Haleigh Ward had back-to-back shots in the 69th minute, with one being saved low by Maggie Warner and the second missing high. With time ticking down, the Hounds continued to press and try to find an equalizer. Amaia Astiasaran flicked one on for Ashley Wenzel to chase onto in the 82nd minute, but Warned was quick off her line to clear the danger. With 3:27 to play, the Hounds won a penalty kick, which Wenzel turned in to equalize for Assumption. 
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS 

  • Wenzel scored her third goal on the season, while DiNapoli scored her first career goal for the Hawks.
  • The Hawks outshot the Greyhounds 23-8, while only eight shots went on goal for the Hawks and three for the Greyhounds.
  • Larsson made seven saves in goal, while Warner made two.
  • Assumption still leads the all-time series 20-15-3.
