WORCESTER, Mass – In a battle of two top ten teams, the No. 6 Saint Anselm College topped the No. 8 Assumption University field hockey team 2-1 in a shootout at Brian Kelly '83 Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Hawks applied lots of pressure out of the gate, firing five shots that all went on the frame, but
Paige Gillette saved all of them to keep the Hounds in it. Assumption had limited chances in the quarter, as Saint Anselm controlled most of the action. The score would stay 0-0 after one quarter.
Right out of the break, Saint Anselm was rewarded with a penalty stroke, which Millie Forster converted to put the Hawks up 1-0. They were rewarded with another penalty corner at 9:15, but Assumption successfully defended it. The Hawks controlled the first half, dominating possession and allowing 0 shots for the Hounds. However, Assumption stayed strong and didn't allow any more goals from the visitors. At the break, the Hounds trailed 1-0.
It was a perfect start to the half, with
May van Woudenberg scoring on the penalty corner assisted by
Lily Daly just two and a half minutes in. At 6:40, the Hounds won another penalty corner, but Van Woudenberg's effort was blocked, and Mackenzie McConnell saved
Elle Murray's rebound attempt. The Hounds controlled the third quarter, as they did not allow a shot from the Hawks in the entire period.
The fourth quarter was back and forth, with both teams trying to find the last chance to win the game potentially. Despite close chances between the Hawks and the Hounds, there were no scorers in the last period, and the game was headed for extra time.
Assumption had the first chance in overtime but could not convert on the penalty corner, and the chance went to waste. In the second overtime period, Assumption was awarded a penalty stroke for
Lily Daly, but Sidney Falterer came straight off the bench for the Hawks to make the stop and keep the visitors alive. Saint Anselm would pull it out in the shootout, 2-1.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- This is the third straight meeting between the sides that has gone to overtime.
- van Woudenberg scored her eighth goal in the third quarter.
- The shots were 10-9 in favor of the Hawks, while the visitors edged in penalty corners 8-6
- Saint Anselm now leads the all-time series 18-17.
