WORCESTER, Mass. – The Assumption University field hockey team came up short in the Northeast-10 Conference Championship game, as Saint Anselm defeated the Greyhounds 2-1 at Brian Kelly '83 Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Score: Saint Anselm College 2, Assumption University 1
Records: Greyhounds (15-6, 12-1 NE10), Hawks (17-3, 11-2 NE10)
HOW IT HAPPENED
The first quarter opened with Assumption on the front foot, firing shots from
Elle Murray and
Lily Daly; however, they failed to hit the target. With less than three minutes remaining,
Mia Salah capitalized on a penalty corner, deflecting a loose ball past Mackenzie McConnell to put the Hounds up 1-0. The initial shot came from
May van Woudenberg, and Salah deflected it into the cage.
Saint Anselm worked to get into the game, with Amanda Lewandowski and Grace Michael having their shots blocked in front. The second quarter would remain scoreless until less than a minute left in the half, where Maggie Burchill would capitalize on a penalty corner. An initial shot from Millie Forster was blocked, while Burchill put in the rebound. At the break, the game was tied at one apiece.
The third quarter began with Assumption trying to respond, with Murray putting an effort wide, as well as Salah. Van Woudenberg had an effort saved by McConnell on the penalty corner as the pressure from Assumption grew. However, despite both sides fighting, it would head to the fourth quarter with the game still tied.
The final period of play gave the Hawks a way back in, with
Callie Beauparlant picking up a green card, putting the Hounds down a player for two minutes. In two minutes, the Hawks compiled three penalty corners, piling the pressure on
Paige Gillette as she scrambled to keep Assumption in it. Beauparlant made a defensive save in the spell, as well as
Caroline O'Connell; however, the Hawks kept possession and won a penalty stroke. Burchill stepped up and buried it, going up 2-1 with 6:04 remaining. Despite the Hounds pushing until the very end, it would be the Saint Anselm Hawks who would prevail and claim the NE10 title, 2-1, over the Assumption Greyhounds.
