WORCESTER, Mass. – All five starters recorded double-digit points as the No. 23/RV Assumption University women's basketball team recorded a 74-69 win against Saint Anselm College Wednesday evening at Laska Gymnasium.
THE BASICS
Score: No. 23/RV Assumption University 74, Saint Anselm College 69
Records: Greyhounds (21-4, 14-4 NE10), Hawks (11-13, 7-11 NE10)
HOW IT HAPPENED
It was a typical fiery start for Assumption, as
Amanda Mieczkowski knocked down two threes, and a
Monica Spain layup forced a quick timeout by the visitors. The Hawks were being suffocated on the offensive end, scoring just two points up until the 4:13 mark of the first quarter. Led by Mieczkowski's perfect shooting so far, the Greyhounds took a 24-12 lead into the second quarter.
The second period opened up more even, as a Hawk's three at 7:27 kept the game at a ten-point difference. Saint Anselm managed to get it down to six, but two quick buckets by Mieczkowski and
Kaijhe Hall quieted that comeback. The runs continued to come from the Hawks, who would not go away quietly and forced their way to the free throw line as the half came closer to a close. With the clock winding down,
Molly Stokes hit a huge three from way beyond the arc to bring the lead back up to nine. Alexa Quirolo answered with a three of her own as the half closed, and the Greyhounds went into the break with a 40-33 lead.
It was a slightly slow start out of the break for the Hounds, but a three-point play by Stokes got them going again. Stokes lit the lamp again with a corner three and brought the lead back up to 12, which it hadn't reached since the first quarter. Spain continued to be aggressive as well, as she made two layups through contact on back-to-back possessions. Assumption took a seven-point lead into the last ten minutes behind Mieczkowski's 14.
As the shot clock winded down,
Marina Callahan got things going in the fourth by hitting a long three. However, the Hawks exploded on a 10-2 run to get the game back within one possession at the 5:09 mark. Assumption built the lead back up through
Ja'Lyn Armstrong, who converted a three-point play and another layup with three minutes remaining. With an eight-point lead, the Greyhounds called a timeout with 1:08 to go. Despite last-ditch attempts from the Hawks, the Greyhounds held on to earn their 21st win on the season, downing Saint Anselm 74-69.
