HOW IT HAPPENED
Assumption came out on fire, going up 8-2 with some aggressive baskets inside with good off-ball movements from the wings.
Amanda Mieczkowski forced her way inside for a layup with contact, forcing the early timeout from the Owls at 5:52. The story in the first quarter was the Greyhound defense as they overwhelmed the Owls, forcing three straight air-balled three-point attempts. Assumption went on an 8-0 run over five minutes and held Southern Connecticut to 20.0 percent from the field, as they led 19-7 after one.
The first couple minutes of the second quarter was a bit more even, as the Owls settled down offensively. Still, Assumption quickly answered with a
Monica Spain driving layup at 6:18. Mieczkowski's two free throws following the media timeout extended the lead to 15, 30-15 with four minutes remaining in the half. The Owls tried to stay aggressive throughout the half, as Isabella Santoro did an excellent job getting to the line, knocking down two free throws with 1:19 left. Mieczkowski's three with 52 seconds left was good to make her the leading scorer at the half with 12, as Assumption held a 33-19 lead at the break.
The third quarter started slow, with both sides exchanging turnovers and fouls. With almost four minutes of action gone, Assumption scored only four points to the Owls' three. The Greyhounds woke up a bit as
Anna Davis made a nice move for two, and Mieczkowski scored a pair of free throws. On the other end, defense led to offense as Curran found a streaking Spain for an easy two, leading to a media timeout and a lead of 19 for the home side. They also finished the quarter strongly, up 49-28, with just ten minutes between them and an NE10 semifinal.
Assumption continued to execute with a twenty-point lead at the start of the quarter. With five minutes remaining, the Greyhounds still had an 18-point advantage. The defense stayed strong the whole way, holding the Owls to 26.7 percent from the field and 0-18 on three-pointers. Assumption would maintain control and head to their first Northeast-10 Conference Semifinals appearance since 2014.
