Women's Lacrosse falls to No. 20 New Haven, 13-11

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Assumption University women's lacrosse team put up a tough fight against the University of New Haven in a battle of two top 25 teams but ultimately fell 13-11 in Northeast-10 Conference action Wednesday evening in Worcester.

Records: Greyhounds (7-6, 4-5 NE10), Chargers (8-5, 5-3 NE10)
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
 
Assumption started on the front foot, going up 3-1 with 8:47 left in the first quarter, with Katelynn Johnston grabbing two. After the excellent start by the Greyhounds, the Chargers ended the first quarter with a run of their own, scoring three straight and evening the game up at 4-4 after one quarter. 
 
The second quarter started a bit slower, with the Chargers scoring to take the lead and then putting on a solid defensive showing for the opening minutes of the second quarter. Isabelle Edwards got Assumption back in it with a behind-the-back shot, and then Johnston got her third on the night to get the lead back 6-5. With five seconds left in the half, Johnston broke through for her fourth on the evening to give the Hounds a 7-6 lead at halftime. 
 
She picked up where she left off in the second half, scoring her fifth at 13:17 to up the lead to 8-6. New Haven responded similarly to the first half, scoring three straight to take charge of 9-8 with 8:17 remaining in the third. The rest of the quarter was back and forth, but a small spurt of offense from the Chargers gave them a slight edge heading into the final quarter leading 11-9. 
 
Marielle Colalillo gave the Chargers their first three-goal advantage with 11:58 remaining in the fourth. Jenna Joseph responded with her first effort on the night to get the visitor's lead back down to two. The Hounds had almost two and a half minutes of consecutive pressure on the Chargers, but Gabby Buschemi stood strong in the net as she made multiple saves to keep the lead for New Haven.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Gabby Buschemi had 15 saves in the contest for the visitors, while Skylar Troyan had ten.
  • Katelynn Johnston led the way with five goals for Assumption.
  • The Chargers outshot the Hounds 37-34, while the Hounds controlled the ground with 21 ground balls to their 16.
