WORCESTER, Mass. – The Assumption University men's basketball team shot nearly 60 percent from long range in the second half to give the Greyhounds a 76-59 win over Southern New Hampshire University in Northeast-10 Conference action Saturday afternoon.
THE BASICS
Score: Assumption University 76, Southern New Hampshire 59
Records: Greyhounds (10-7, 6-5 NE10), Penmen (10-6, 6-5 NE10)
HOW IT HAPPENED
It was a back-and-forth affair out the gate, with both teams going at it. The Hounds started slower than the Penmen, as the visitors played with a four-five-point lead for the opening 10 minutes of action, specifically Derrick Grant getting going on the inside. The Penmen extended it to six, answered by a three from
Kyle Gaskins, who continued his strong play off the bench with his showing today. Assumption fell to down eight following another Grant jumper, but the Hounds pushed on a small five-point run to close the gap through
Kasey Draper. The run continued with the Hounds eventually taking a slight one-point lead at the break, which they would carry into halftime, Assumption up 27-26.
The second half of action was different, with the Greyhounds outsourcing the Penmen 49-33.
Njavan Stewart and Draper came out of the break with energy, helping score six quick points. From then on, the Hounds took over. Gaskins and Draper buried threes to put Assumption up double digits, and it was too much for the visitors to come back from. Preston Santos converted at 11 minutes to chop it back down to a single-digit lead, but Glover and
Daouda Dembele used back-to-back treys to extend to 17 and blow the game open. In the last eight minutes, the Penmen had no answer for the Greyhound's shot-making and defense, and Assumption picked up their third straight conference win 76-59.
