HOW IT HAPPENED
Saint Rose came out strong to start, as Nuha Sagnia scored a quick four points, and Tristan Jeffries knocked down two free throws for an 8-4 lead. With an 18-12 lead for Saint Rose, the Hounds began to convert, as
Kyle Gaskins responded with a three, and Kasey Draped converted on a driving layup.
Alex Carlisle picked up where he left off versus Adelphi, knocking down a big three to pull Assumption within one at 25-24 with five minutes to go. He scored five points for the Hounds to lead them at the break, with his driving layup at 2:44 getting the lead back to 30-28. A quick spurt before the break, capped off by another Gaskins three, gave Assumption a 37-32 lead at halftime.
The Hounds had an eight-point lead after an opening run in the second half, but Saint Rose fought back before Assumption extended it to 49-39 with a big three from Draper. By the halfway mark of the second half, the Hounds lost the lead as Tristian Jeffries hit a big three to get back within one. For the remainder of the game, it was neck and neck down the stretch, with Assumption holding a four-point lead with 1:45 to go. After a clutch three and a free throw, Ata Turgut tied the game at 70-70, and Assumption could not reply as the game went to overtime.
Overtime started with Saint Rose scoring, followed by Assumption responding. Trey Boyd III hit his two free throws with 41 seconds remaining to tie the game. However, the Hounds had a look at the buzzer.
Alex Carlisle got a decent shot off, but it would hit the rim, and we would need another five minutes. The double overtime period was back and forth, with Draper adding to his total as his free throws with 1:13 left put Assumption up 82-79, giving him 20. After
Kyle Gaskins was fouled, he knocked down both shots, forcing Saint Rose to go full court with seven seconds left. Boyd III knocked down a three as the clock expired to silence Laska Gymnasium and push the game into overtime three.
The third overtime was all Saint Rose. Using the momentum from the buzzer-beater, they strung out a five-point run to open the period and then responded again to the Hounds getting within one with two big free throws from Boyd III. With 23 seconds remaining and the Golden Knights up two, Dante Weise nailed a pull-up jumper to make it a two-possession game and force the Hounds into a timeout. Forced to play the fouling game, the Hounds would not score from this point forward. In a Northeast-10 marathon, Saint Rose defeated Assumption 102-94 in triple overtime.
