COLCHESTER, VT.—The Assumption University men's basketball team opened Northeast-10 Conference action with an 87-75 win over Saint Michael's College Wednesday evening.
THE BASICS:

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Assumption used smothering defense in the first half and capitalized on 14 Saint Michael's turnovers for six fast break points and 13 off turnovers to control play in the first half. The Greyhounds would grow their advantage to as large as 14 points (43-29) with 28 seconds left in the opening frame.
In the second half, the Hounds' lead would slowly expand their lead, as it would grow to 24 points (79-55) with just over five minutes remaining in regulation, with
Daouda Dembele converting on a layup. Saint Michael's would not go quietly, as they went on a 20-8 run to close the contest, but the Blue and White advantage was too great to overcome, with an 87-75 final score.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Daouda Dembele led all scorers with a career-high 23 points while adding five rebounds, two assists, and two steals.
- Jamal Barnes connected on five three-pointers as he poured in 19 points.
- Saint Michael's won the battle on the glass, 40-37, while Assumption forced 17 Purple Knight turnovers.
- The Greyhounds outscored the hosts 15-6 on second-chance points and 58-38 from inside the paint.
- Assumption continues to lead the all-time series 60-42
