Women's Ice Hockey falls to Stonehill in NEWHA Quarterfinals, 3-1

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – The Assumption University women's ice hockey team's inaugural season came to a close following a 3-1 loss to Stonehill College in the New England Women's Hockey Alliance Quarterfinals Saturday afternoon at the Bridgewater Ice Arena.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Like game one, Stonehill was the first team to score, as Maddison Achtyl opened the scoring at 7:26 of the first period. The Skyhawks' would double in the final minute of the opening frame as Alexis Petford found the back of the net.
 
The Greyhounds would eventually get on the board at the halfway mark of the middle period. Ava McGaffigan scored on the powerplay, with Emma Gurnell and Lily Corso recording assists on the goal. The game would head into the third period with Stonehill leading 2-1, but despite outshooting the hosts 22-8 in the frame, the Greyhounds would be unable to tie the game. The Skyhawks put a cap on the quarterfinal matchup with an empty net goal with just over a minute remaining in regulation.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Carissa Mudrak and Katelyn Michals combined to record 21 saves in the crease for the Greyhounds.
  • Assumption outshot Stonehill 33-24, while the hosts won 34 of 58 faceoffs.
  • The Greyhounds went 1-for-8 on the powerplay, while the Skyhawks were 0-for-5.
  • Stonehill now leads the all-time series 5-1-0.
