CALDWELL, N.J. – The Assumption University softball team split their four-game series against Caldwell University, as the Greyhounds took game one 7-4 but would fall in game two 4-0 Sunday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
GAME ONE – Assumption University 9, Caldwell University 4
Assumption was the first team to threaten, loading the bases in the top of the first inning with just one out in the frame, but the Caldwell defense stood firm and kept the Greyhounds off the board. The Greyhounds got on the board in the top of the third inning, as
Kaitlyn Cahill led off the inning with a triple to right field before scoring a
Lauren Geremia infield single.
Corin Mahan doubled the Assumption lead as she drove in Geremia with an infield single. The Greyhounds continued to add to their lead, as they plated three more runs in the frame, as
Jordan Dwyer and
Summer Sheerin recorded RBI, making it 5-0 Assumption.
Caldwell attempted to answer the Greyhounds' five-run top of the third with a run in the bottom half, but McKenzie Nazionale was cut down at the plate on a failed suicide squeeze. Mahan picked up her second RBI of the day in the top of the fourth as she singled to center field, scoring Geremia on the play. The Cougars got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth inning, as Riley Reindeau hit a two-run home run to left center field.
After the Greyhounds added insurance runs in the fifth and sixth innings to go up 8-2, Caldwell cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the sixth after plating a pair of runs. Assumption tacked on one more run in the top of the seventh, pushing their advantage to 9-4.
Paige Cote went the distance for the Greyhounds, as she struck out two and allowed seven hits.
GAME TWO – Caldwell University 4, Assumption University 0
Caldwell was the first team to score, plated a run in the bottom of the fourth to go up 1-0. The Cougars extended their lead to 4-0 following an Ashleigh Tavaska three-run home run to center field in the bottom of the fifth inning.
The Greyhounds would threaten in the top of the seventh inning, as they got two runners on, but they could not get on the scoreboard and would fall 4-0.
