Softball sweeps Post University in home opener, 7-1, 7-5

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Assumption University softball team broke out their brooms for their home opener. The Greyhounds swept Post University 7-1, 7-5, in their non-conference doubleheader Wednesday evening.

Records: Greyhounds (6-8, 0-0 NE10), Eagles (2-14, 0-0 CACC)
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
GAME ONE – Assumption University 7, Post University 1
Assumption was the first team to strike, as Summer Sheerin scored on a Jordan Dwyer groundout in the bottom of the second inning. After Post tied the game in the top of the third inning, the Greyhounds responded with two runs in the bottom of the third. Abigail Larson scored on a bunt single by Lauren Geremia, and she would come around to score on a ground out by Alyssa Johnson
 
Raigan Gregoire scored in the bottom of the fourth inning, beating the throw home, giving Assumption a 4-1 advantage. Emma Bloom added two more runs in the frame and tripled to left field, plating Heather Junjulas and Jordan Dwyer on the play. Johnson drove in Geremia in the fifth inning to finish the scoring, making it 7-1. 
 
Zoey McDonough recorded her first collegiate win, pitching 5.0 innings. She struck out five and allowed just one hit. 
 
GAME TWO – Assumption University 7, Post University 5 – 5 Innings
Post struck early, scoring once in the top of the first inning. The Greyhounds capitalized on their speed, scoring four times in the bottom of the first, with Dwyer, Jaiden Tonucci, Gregoire, and Sheerin all crossing the plate in the inning. 
 
In the bottom of the second inning, Tonucci drove in Dwyer with a sacrifice fly to right field, pushing the lead to 5-1. The Eagles responded in the top of the third inning, striking for four runs in the frame to tie the game at 5-5. Grace Heim came up clutch in the bottom of the fourth, as her single drove in Dwyer and Tonucci on the play, giving Assumption a 7-5 lead. Post would get a runner-in-scoring position in the top of the fifth inning, but the game would be called due to the weather. 
 
Samantha Hardwick earned the win. She pitched a 3.0 inning of shutout softball, allowing one hit and striking out two.
