HOW IT HAPPENED
GAME ONE – Assumption University 15, Saginaw Valley State University 3
The game was a defensive battle in the first few innings, as neither team could generate any real offense. Saginaw Valley threatened in the bottom of the third inning as they proceeded to load the bases, but Samatha Hardwick came into the game and recorded two quick outs to keep the game scoreless. The same thing would happen in the fourth, but Hardwick would get out of the jam to keep things 0-0.
In the top of the fifth inning, the Greyhounds put a seven spot in the frame to go up 7-0.
Jordan Dwyer had an RBI triple to the left before Summer Sheridan had a two-run home run over the left field fence.
Allyson Wargo capped off the inning with an RBI single through the right side of the infield to finish off the scoring in the frame. In the bottom of the fifth, the Cardinals went down in order.
After Assumption plated a pair of runs at the top of the sixth, Saginaw Valley got on the board with three runs at the bottom, cutting the deficit to 9-3. The Greyhounds responded with a six-run top of the seventh to go up 15-3.
The Assumption pitching staff combined to allow just one earned run while striking out two and allowing four base hits.
GAME TWO – Assumption University 3, Wilmington University 2 – 8 Innings
Like game one, neither team could generate offense until the top of the sixth inning, as
Jaiden Tonucci beat out a bunt, scoring
Kaitlyn Cahill on the play. Wilmington tied the game with two outs in the bottom of the seventh to send the game to extra innings. Assumption capitalized on the extra frame, as
Jordan Dwyer doubled home
Emma Bloom to give the Greyhounds a 2-1 lead before Dwyer scored on a sacrifice fly to center.
The Wildcats would plate one run in the bottom of the eighth, but they would strand runners on first and second but could not scratch across the game-tying run.
Anna Tassone went the distance, scattering 11 hits, but only allowed one earned run.
